The Bird Walk at Gurukul College, Udaipur, brought together 10 participants for a morning of birdwatching and nature exploration led by Bhuvnesh Kumar. The walk explored the college campus and its surrounding habitats, including open grounds, trees, and nearby water bodies, revealing a diverse assemblage of birds adapted to both urban and semi-natural environments. Participants recorded 20 bird species during the session, with highlights including the striking Common Kingfisher and White-throated Kingfisher, along with Common Sandpipers foraging along the water’s edge. Other notable sightings included Alexandrine Parakeets, Grey Francolins, Rosy Starlings, and the ever-alert Red-wattled Lapwing, offering participants a glimpse into the rich birdlife found within and around the campus.

The walk also featured a variety of familiar and colourful species such as Asian Green Bee-eater, Purple Sunbird, White-eared Bulbul, Brahminy Starling, White-rumped Munia, and Coppersmith Barbet. Flocks of House Sparrows, Jungle Babblers, and Rock Pigeons provided excellent opportunities for participants to practice bird identification and observe bird behaviour up close. The diversity recorded during the walk highlighted the ecological value of campus green spaces and nearby wetlands, demonstrating how educational institutions can serve as important refuges for biodiversity while fostering curiosity and appreciation for nature among students.

Bhuvnesh Kumar is an M.Sc. Wildlife Science student at the University of Kota with a deep-rooted passion for biodiversity conservation and environmental awareness. His interest in birding is closely connected to his broader commitment to understanding and protecting local ecosystems. With a strong academic foundation in wildlife science, he aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and on-ground conservation by engaging people directly with nature through guided bird walks and field-based learning experiences.
