Campus Bird Walk at University of Kota, Rajasthan

Highlights from the Event

Ataavi’s Campus Bird Walk at the University of Kota brought together 12 participants for a rewarding morning of birdwatching led by Bhuvnesh Kumar. Exploring the university’s green spaces and water-associated habitats, participants recorded 28 bird species, highlighting the campus’s importance as an urban biodiversity hotspot. Memorable sightings included three Asian Barn-Owls, Indian Peafowl, Grey Heron, Indian Cormorant, Lesser Whistling-Ducks, and the colourful Indian Roller. The presence of wetland birds alongside woodland and open-country species showcased the diversity of habitats found within and around the university campus.

The walk also featured a variety of common and charismatic birds, including Alexandrine and Rose-ringed Parakeets, Asian Green Bee-eaters, Black Drongos, Hume’s Warblers, White-eared Bulbuls, and Purple Sunbirds. Large flocks of House Sparrows, Rock Pigeons, Jungle Babblers, and Red-wattled Lapwings provided excellent opportunities for participants to observe bird behaviour and practice identification skills. Through the morning’s observations and discussions, participants gained a deeper understanding of local birdlife and the vital role that educational campuses play in supporting biodiversity and fostering a connection with nature.

Bhuvnesh Kumar is an M.Sc. Wildlife Science student at the University of Kota with a deep-rooted passion for biodiversity conservation and environmental awareness. His interest in birding is closely connected to his broader commitment to understanding and protecting local ecosystems. With a strong academic foundation in wildlife science, he aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and on-ground conservation by engaging people directly with nature through guided bird walks and field-based learning experiences.
